RIP Harold Ramis. Yay Jason Collins!

Ghaa — stupid aging, how I hate you!  One of the coolest “oh yeah — that guy!” actors / writers / directors ever, Harold Ramis, died today at age 69 (CBC) due to autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. That blows.

Most people will remember Ramis (IMDB) as Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters (which he co-wrote with  Dan Ackroyd), or as the director of Groundhog Day—both freakin’ brilliant movies.

But as a kid growing up in NoWheresville, SK, I’ll always remember him as Moe Green, who presented “Dialling For Dollars” on SCTV (Wikepedia), a show which (for better or worse — generally both) defined my comedic sensibilities.

Here’s a clip of Ramis doing a commercial for the “North American Stethoscopy Institute” on SCTV (Youtube). If you watch it and can’t see why he’s brilliant, well... you just can’t see brilliance.

And now for some good news: Jason Collins became the first openly gay active player in any of North America’s major pro sports leagues (NFL, NBA, NHL, CFL, etc.) last night, after signing a tryout contract with the National Basketball Association’s Brooklyn Nets! (Globe and Mail) Awesome!!!
