Falling Awake Review

By Ezekiel McAdams

Falling Awake is a exactly what a Fringe should be. Weird, surreal, absurd and laced with performance  theatre that by time you walk out either you're thinking "What was that?" with confusion or leaving with a big grin plastered on your face .

Falling Awake is written, directed and stars Vancouver performers, Nayana Feilkov and Matthew "Poki" McCorkle. Feilkov and McCorkle play an unnamed woman dreaming  of her dead lover.

Feilkov is instantly  memorable as she sings, dances and uses her facial expressions and body throughout the show sometimes to comical effect  with gags like a clothesline or coffee  or being relatable with the audience as her character  converses with her mind. Feilkov is so instantly charming as she changes her vocal pitch, bemuses about fish  that the whole hour goes by quickly.

Special mention to McCorkle who's physical presence  is amazing. McCorkle at one point does a bit with an umbrella that almost stole the show.

Falling Awake's dreamlike quality  not only works in its favor, it's the reason Fringe festivals were created in the first place, a space that provides the audience an experience they will most likely never experience again.

Falling Awake is highly recommended for not only Fringe theatre goers but anyone who wants something different, magical and unforgettable.

Falling Awake can be seen at Victoria School Gym.
