Shadows in Bloom Review

By Ezekiel McAdams

Is Quadruple threat a word? If it isn't, it should be and Gemma Wilcox is it.

Coming from  London, UK, Wilcox brings a madcap hurricane to this one woman show as she effortlessly plays 22 different characters.

Wilcox's show is a dramedy about the misadventures of Sondra, her friends, her dating life, her upcoming birthday and even the restaurant are all part of the 60 minute production that goes by quickly.

Wilcox is able to jump in out of multiple accents, affectations and body language as she plays both genders and wears the characters like old clothes. It's quite incredible and fascinating how like the flip of a mental switch, Wilcox makes us laugh and feel for twenty two different characters. This kind of mental gymnastics should be not only recognized but rewarded.

Special mention goes to Wilcox's ability to improv with the audience as part of her act. It was delightful  watching her interact with surprised participants.

The direction of Wilcox's play is fast paced enough that the hour never drags.

The set is non-existent with just Wilcox being on stage alone, there are no props and for 60 mins, she is able to transport you into the life of Sondra without notice.

Wilcox's seamless performance of multiple characters is worth the admission.
